Weekly update 22.05.2016

With the landing cupboard painted, I used up a couple of old lengths of trunking to conceal the mains cables which supply the smoke alarm and first floor lighting circuits. They weren't quite long enough to reach the ceiling, but just about covered the height of the door frame. The exposed bits of cable at the top were neatly bound with a few cable ties.

The shelving frame could then be reassembled and fitted.  I had to make a few minor adjustments to this as it was just too tight against the trunking. I also took the opportunity to level the battens which were slightly sloping.

The landing is now almost complete... just another coat of emulsion required on the ceiling as it's proving a bit of a challenge to cover the "yellow" ceiling paper. I will finish top-coating the banister once the ceiling is complete... for now it serves as a handy platform to stand on...  don't try this at home!!

So... at last... we make a start downstairs. The priority is to level the floor in the dining room. To facilitate this, I needed to first level the step into the kitchen. This is currently brick edged, faced with about an inch of mortar render and dips considerably in the centre.

I figured the best bet would be to chip off the mortar and replace it with a straight piece of timber.

I cut a piece of 18mm chipboard to size and ran the router along the top edge to ensure it was perfectly straight. This was then drilled and counter-sunk. Corresponding holes were drilled into the bricks and plugged with rawlplugs.

The depressions were packed out with a couple of scrap offcuts and, for additional security, a few blobs of grab adhesive were applied.

With the new riser in place and levelled, you can see from the other side just how much the old step dips in the centre... about 15mm (1/2 inch) at the deepest part. When the floor is screeded, this will serve as a level guide and will help to prevent any spillage into the kitchen
