Weekly update 08.11.2015

We spent a few days in Helsinki this week, so progress on the house has been modest. However, before we went, we stripped out the rest of the bathroom with the exception of the loo.

The cistern and basin went to the local tip... the bath will be attacked with an angle grinder in due course so that it can be disposed of.

I've left much of the old pipework in situ as I'm still undecided on whether or not to re-use it. Joining on new pipework may prove difficult as the old pipes are covered in several thick layers of paint. Removing them however means digging them out from the concrete floor.

In a bid to keep the plasterers from having to use the new kitchen, I took the old outdoor tap, re-furbished it and mounted it on a new wall plate on the wall where the bath will go. I re-routed my temporary braided hose connection to this so now have running water back in the bathroom. The hot feed to the bathroom has been temporarily capped off using a push fit end stop.

The new shower cable was previously routed through the old ceiling mounted isolator switch and via the old cable to the shower itself. However, with the shower now off the wall, it was time to reconfigure the cabling. The old section of cable and the isolator switch were removed and the new cable then chased into the wall. Quite a large area of plaster fell away when the wall was chased so this was patched with fresh mortar.

And so with just one day to go before leaving for Helsinki, in came the plasterers. The ceiling was overboarded with new plasterboard then the whole room patched and skimmed. New beadings were fitted round the window to smarten it up. The window itself is still broken... several weeks have passed and we still haven't received any quotes!!!

All mod cons!  W/C, washing up bowl, flannel, soap and toothbrush... what more do you need?
